New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
